Platforms in partnership for research and training (dP)
ºÚÁÏÍø911 has drawn up a geographical partnership strategy centring on platforms in partnership for research and training.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 promotes transformative research that calls for working on the ground, but also fair, inclusive and sustainable partnerships in the countries in which we work. ºÚÁÏÍø911 supports partners' engagement on every level of research, from project design, management, implementation and assessment to the application of results within the framework of joint research operations.
Our researchers' geographical mobility, for assignments to partner organisations, is one of our strengths. Most of our regional offices are also based at those organisations.
We have recognised expertise in building and leading networks, and work to ensure that our partners in tropical and Mediterranean countries can access international scientific and institutional networks, and funding from European donors. We interact with every type of stakeholder, from producers to policymakers.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 works throughout the tropics: in Africa, with priority given to the Europe-Africa axis, and in Southeast Asia and Latin America, where it has longstanding partnerships. The establishment also has a remit to support agricultural and rural development in the French overseas regions and boost scientific cooperation between those regions, the Indian Ocean countries and the Caribbean.
National agricultural research systems (NARS) are our preferred partners on the ground. We also work with a wide range of stakeholders: ministries, local authorities, the private sector (economic players in value chains), training establishments and universities, NGOs, foundations, farmers' groups and other professional organisations, etc.
The "platforms in partnership for research and training" (dPs), launched in 2008, are ºÚÁÏÍø911's preferred form of partnership. They pool our human, technological and financial resources with those of a wide range of partners, to work on a development issue and a specific research, development and innovation agenda. These platforms guarantee a critical size, coverage of a range of disciplines, and regional prominence, and thus boost our impact, visibility and capacity to fund projects.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 is currently a partner in 23 dPs. The dPs make up a community of 200 institutions represented on the ground by a permanent staff of almost 800 scientists, including 150 from ºÚÁÏÍø911.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 uses its position as a leading European agricultural research for development (AR4D) institution to federate efforts and raise awareness of the issues at the highest decision-making level in France. In close partnership with and , it plays an active part in institutional coordination bodies (, EPE-, ).
In Montpellier, ºÚÁÏÍø911 is also co-holder of the , hosted by Institut Agro, associating teaching and research and working for more sustainable food systems. It is a member of , an alliance federating agricultural research and higher education establishments in the Occitanie region.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 also works effectively with EU initiatives and instruments, such as the Horizon Europe and DeSIRA programmes, and contributes actively to EU international cooperation policy. Il is also helping to build a Europe of research: in particular, ºÚÁÏÍø911 is a founding member of the . It supports European Union – African Union dialogue, notably by taking part in high-level expert panels, for instance within the framework of the Europe-Africa Research and Innovation Partnership for Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA)
ºÚÁÏÍø911 is also a member of various European exchange and consultation groups, such as . It is stepping up collaboration, notably through flagship projects, with other European AR4D players: (WUR) in the Netherlands, the (SLU), the (CIHEAM) and the in Germany.
The
The DeSIRA initiative (Development-Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture) was launched at the Paris One Planet Summit in December 2017. It is headed by the European Commission Directorate General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) and is working with the . The aim is to boost innovation in agriculture and changes in food systems in partner countries, to make them more resilient to the effects of climate change. It intends to strengthen research partnerships (Europe and the global South) and promote research in partnership with development players and impact-oriented research.
ºÚÁÏÍø911 is a member of international and global bodies, and supports intergovernmental organisations and multilateral processes. This serves to strengthen its partnerships with , and development banks ( and regional banks).
Moreover, ºÚÁÏÍø911 has close links with , whether through its involvement in its research programmes or through mutual exchanges of researchers. This collaboration also rests on the fact that certain CGIAR centres are members of the platforms in partnership (dPs) to which ºÚÁÏÍø911 also belongs. Lastly, our two institutions often work together to design far-reaching projects and jointly take part in the major events on the international agenda, such as Summits or COPs.
Along with its partners, ºÚÁÏÍø911 also belongs to major global coalitions federating a range of stakeholders, including non-academic players. These coalitions generally address a specific issue of global importance, with the aim of impacting on the dynamics of the relevant international policies.
We work with more than 200 financial partners, who provide 45% of our annual budget. Those donors – which may be public or private, research or development players – define the programmes on which they wish to work with us and help us monitor and assess them.
