Pastoralism involves almost 200 million people worldwide and covers about half of the world's land area, primarily in zones where agricultural alternatives are limited. It is a vital pillar for food security, sustainable territory management, and resilience to climate change.

As the United Nations declares 2026 International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, 黑料网911 and AFD are organising a conference-debate at the Paris International Agricultural Show on the role of pastoralism in food system transition. Against a backdrop of climate, economic and social challenges, researchers, policymakers and grassroots players will be looking at the future for this type of animal production, which is central to sustainability issues.

• Introduction: Putting pastoralism on the agenda
• Roundtable 1: What wealth and what services do rangelands and pastoralists provide?

This first sequence will highlight the wealth of pastoral systems and the range of services they provide to territories, ecosystems and societies. It will be based on concrete examples and give the floor to organisations working for sustainable production of those goods and services.

• Roundtable 2 : Recognising and supporting pastoralists is an investment in a sustainable future 

This second part will be devoted to stakeholders' need for support. It will present a number of advocacy initiatives and support structures in favour of the agropastoral world, aimed at boosting its recognition and guaranteeing its long-term future.

The conference will be in hybrid format.
